Fake Two-Lane Blacktop '55 Chevy Out Of Tennessee

This car first surfaced in 2007 when the owner tried to convince a producer for Hot Rod TV that his '55 was one of the actual cars used to film Two-Lane Blacktop, that he built the '55s for the movie, and that he was the mechanic in the movie.

Luckily the producer contacted Richard Ruth before the scam went too far. He forwarded the digital photos to me. Any sharp-eyed member here will be able to spot this obvious fake for what it is. I was also able to read the VIN on the A-pillar on the original high-resolution photos - for future reference since the VINs of the original cars are known.

This fake American Graffiti '55 Chevy came to light publicly when Bonhams and Butterfields announced an auction of "The George Barris Collection of Kustom Television and Movie Cars and other properties" in the April 2005 issue of Hemmings Motor News.  The auction listing on Bonhams' website was full of errors about the history of the TLB and AG cars and stated that the car being auctioned was the stunt car. Barris later changed his story and Bonhams stated it was the burn car. Barris again changed his story and just prior to the auction it was announced that the car was not associated with the filming.

Fake American Graffiti '55 Documented By Wrong Studio - OOPS

This fake American Graffiti '55 Chevy first came to public attention in 1999 when it was offered for sale on ebay. The guy never posted photos of his car and eventually pulled the auction after a flood of calls about the "facts" on the history of the car. Later, reports of the car being exhibited as the real American Graffiti '55 Chevy in the King of Prussia, PA, area surfaced and members of this website were able to take photos of the car and its studio documentation. However, the studio documentation was from the WRONG STUDIO! It was offered on ebay again in 2003 as an undocumented car with possible movie history and it was sold. Turns out, the car was the old Jim Zakia gasser!

Classification of this car is tough, since it could've been a nice American Graffiti '55 Chevy tribute car. Since it was initially offered for sale as the "verified" original Two-Lane Blacktop and American Graffiti movie car, it's listed here as a FAKE....

Clone American Graffiti '55 Owned By Rick Figari

This particular American Graffiti '55 Chevy clone/tribute car came to public attention in early 2000 when it was offerred on ebay as an American Graffiti '55 Chevy replica. Rick Figari bought it and had Richard Ruth install a straight axle front end and other modifications to make it one of the most, if not THE most, correct American Graffiti '55 clone around. Figari often displays it with the real '32 Ford Coupe from the movie, and no doubt many people walk away thinking they've seen the real car.

Since it has never been offered to for sale with intent to defraud, it is listed here as a CLONE.
